Hosts, Domain Names and Servers

Overview

It’s 2009 – people expect you to have your own website, they expect you to have
your own domain name and they expect you to look modern, be easy to navigate
and for it to be easy to contact you.
Kilted Chaos can help you with the design, look and feel of your site, but you are responsible for getting your domain name and hosting the site.

Domain Name
Most businesses nowadays have their own domain name, if you don’t it’s an easy process to set up a free account with a domain name registrar like godaddy.com and buy the name that best suits your business.
We advise buying the domain name on a multi year basis, to avoid “Accidental” expiry of your name and someone else buying it. (It happens!)

Hosting
If you are going to run your own website, you are going to need a company to “host” your site for you.  Think of it as similar to a shop renting space in a mall – you provide the design, the décor and the store’s content but they provide the physical space.

Server
This is the machine that your website sits on – we like Linux platforms, contact us if you need help choosing the right package. This machine is pretty similar to your computer it holds your data and “serves” copies of it to other servers when they come asking for it..

Security
You are responsible for your own security, you need to ensure you keep the doors locked and make it tough for burglars (see getting hacked) but you don’t have to worry about the Mall getting firebombed.  If that happens then you can rest assured – if you have gone with a reputable firm – they are working on it.  Being secure means making really good passwords – we can help you with that.

I now Have a Domain and a Host Company.
Great! – at this point all you do is give us access to your host and we will install and configure your site and when everybody is happy you can then change the password if you wish

Companies that we recommend:

Dreamhost
Bluehost
WebWizards

If you have any questions on hosting, or any of the above jargon – feel free to ask us when we start planning your site. We’ll be happy to help you make sense of it all.
